Beijing- Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with private representatives of the 14th Dalai Lama in Beijing recently, the department said on Thursday. This is the second round of talks held before Beijing Olympic Games and the next round of contact may be held before the end of this year, according to the officials of the department

BEIJING -- China's economy might continue to decelerate as a result of slower industrial output growth and weakening overseas demand, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) . China has seen some major measures of its economy slow down for the first time in five years.Gross domestic product stood at 6.15 trillion yuan (900 billion US dollars) in the first quarter, up 10.6 percent year-on-year. However, the growth rate was 1.1 percentage lower than a year earlier. Exports in the first five months rose 22.9 percent to 545.1 billion US dollars, but the growth rate was 4.9 percentage points lower than a year earlier. Exports of energy-intensive products, such as steel and steel slabs, dropped 20.8 percent and 96.9 percent, respectively.

Wimbledon, UK- Zheng jie has made the history here to become the first Chinese player to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam by beating Nicole Vaidisova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. The 133rd-ranked Zheng is also the first wild-card entrant to reach the women's semis at Wimbledon and second at any Grand Slam.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrives in Beijing on Tuesday for a three day official visit to China.The UN chief is on a two-week, three-nation official visit to East Asia. He arrived last Saturday in Kyoto, Japan, where a major climate change treaty was forged more than a decade ago. He is scheduled to give a speech at the China Foreign Affairs University and also meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other senior officials to discuss mainly climate changes issues.
